I’ll play the Crown Prince’s game. I’ll wear the tiny initiate crown, dance in my glittering pink dress, survive the deadly exams, and ultimately graduate as the Crown Princess all while he thinks I’m playing right into his plans. This is my chance to do more than survive-this is my chance to fight back. I’m sure my talents for the Criminal Guild won’t earn me any extra credit in my princess classes.Īll my life I’ve stayed one step ahead of the two-faced fae and their Malice, the out of control black magic that has nearly wiped out all of humanity. He can’t know that I’m actually the most powerful Malice Caster in the Dregs. I know how ruthless the fae can be.Īll the princess initiates are captivated by Lucas, the sexy fae Crown Prince who, in turn, seems fixated on me. Our first exam is in three weeks and not every student will make it out alive… don’t these bimbos realize that? I’m not fooled. I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes! Summary:īorn and raised in the Dregs, the last thing I expected was the “honor” of being recruited to Crown Princess Academy.Īnd by honor, I mean fighting for my life against the fae that rule our world. I also love the love triangle that gets introduced towards the end. That coupled with the exploration of Light and how it can become controlling and where it draws its power from if Malice draws from all the ugly, “bad” emotions was very compelling. I especially like that our MC Penne accepted the Malice as a part of life instead of rejecting it to remain pure. I actually thought the magic system was a unique look at the trope of light vs dark or good vs evil. Malice is balanced by Light, which is not as well defined. The cover led me to believe the story was going to focus on girly froufrou princess stuff, but in fact this book takes a look at the darker aspects of magic and the humans being devoured by Malice, which is a dark version of magic fueled by pain and anger. I am having a hard time finding words to express just how much I enjoyed this read, which I randomly chose from Prime Reading to fulfill a badge in the January 2021 Kindle Challenge. I am devastated that book two is not available yet as I wanted to dive right in and keep going after that amazing cliffhanger. I loved this one! I adore a good magical academy, a competition story, Fae acting malicious, and this book absolutely delivered on all three.
